A is a very polite and well-mannered young chap. He had a deep 16 DO restoration done in Viet Nam while backpacking a year ago. The tooth had since became necrotic and he decided to have RCT. He came back for obturation yesterday.
A: Can you drink alcohol after RCT?
Me: Yes
A: Oh
*Silent*
A: My friend was having a big birthday party over the weekend. I didn't want to drink so I told them my dentist said don't drink any alcohol after RCT.
Me: -_-"

Talking about alcohol in the office reminds me of a sales rep who told me that he used to call on one dentist who would run back to his private office between patients for a shot of vodka.

i don't think it's the alcohol alone that's the problem after RCT. it's usuall the way it reacts with the antibiotics that are usually prescribed, especially clindamycin which gives you tummy troubles by itself.
a friend of mine who was recovering from strep throat when we were in college felt well enough to come out with us to a party. he had been on amoxoillin for about 4 days and was completely asymptomatic. he had two beers and was puking his guts out the entire way home. this was a guy who could drink like a fish, let me tell you. my friends were sick and twisted enough to snap photos of the poor guy with his head in the toilet. they still have those pictures someplace in their "archives." man, i miss those days...
what were we talking about? oh, yeah, antibiotics and stuff! since i frequently prescribe antibiotics after RCT, i usually say alcohol is a no-no.
I don't prescribe AB after RCT so it's perfectly safe to drink alcohol after that. :D :p
